Search Engine Optimization (SEO) allows your website to be found in a search engines results. The higher your web site appears in the result list, the more likely it is people see it when they are using a search engine.

Here are some of the ways to increase your websites SEO.

Title Tag

Focus on short phrases for the tag. Select the words and phrases that best describe the page.

              <title> </title>

Meta Tags

The robot tag is one that is most often looked at along with description. The tag looks like this:

              <meta name="robots" content="">

The robot tag is used to either tell the search engines to index the webpage or not to index it. Meta code goes between the:

              <head> </head>

The four examples of the robot tags are as follows:

Indexes and the search engine will follow.

		       <meta name="robots" content="index,follow">

Doesn’t index but the search engine will follow.

		       <meta name="robots" content="noindex,follow">

Indexes, but search engines don’t follow.

		      <meta name="robots" content="index,nofollow">

Doesn’t index and search engines don’t follow.

		      <meta name="robots" content="noindex,nofollow">

The description tag looks like this:

              <meta name=" description" content="example of what a description looks like.">

Use this if you don't want search engines to use any of the content on your site.

The above Meta robot tags are just a few ways to block bots, a more effective way can be read on the Blocking Bots page.

Domain Name

The domain name helps with SEO. The closer the domain name is to the website content, the better search engines will like it. Choosing a proper domain for your portfolio is important, since it is how your clients will be finding you. A good marketing strategy is to try to make your domain name as small as possible to minimize clients going to the wrong website. .

The more inbound (links coming from other sites) and outbound (links to external sites), the higher your SEO ranking will be. For example, in your portfolio website you will want to have a link to your site on your Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, and any other social networking accounts you may have, as this will raise your page ranking in many search engines. You also want to have links on your social media sites linking back to your site. The links have to be mutual in order to work. The HTML code for this can be represented in a body of text, selecting particular words or phrases. The code is:

              <a href="example.html" title="describe link">
		      This text will be displayed

It can link to another page on your site, or link to other websites.
